When the noonday sun is at the same angle above the horizon as I am in years, it’s too hot for me to be outside. So here I am in my recliner, drinking iced tea, rearranging some neurons, AKA reading, and writing down any words inspired by the tiny electrical sparks in the new neural circuits assembling in my brain. I like to think of this as Analog Intelligence or AI 1.0.
Now I will admit to using AI 2.0 as an assistant. This glorified spellchecker quickly uncovers the glitches from the old analog system in my head. If I ask AI 2.0 to do more than fix spelling and grammar, it flattens what I write. Some would say it removes the soul.
I also use AI 2.0 to research topics. A tool with a current estimated IQ of 180 and access to more information than the Library of Congress, that’s a valuable resource.
Sometimes it tells me I’m wrong about an idea, that’s good. Everyone could use a bit more education. Sometimes I tell it it’s wrong. That happens less often than it used to. I don’t know, maybe AI is getting better at telling lies. Mostly we get along.
Someone told me to use two other AIs to fact check questionable output. Look for a consensus. That’s probably a good idea when inaccurate research has serious consequences.
That’s it. Now you know how and why this senior citizen has adopted an AI assistant. Humanity’s inventions have proven both beneficial and harmful. Some folks tell us that AI will be the death of us. Super intelligence moderated by human conscience is the path forward. We have to stay in the loop.
Here’s to a prosperous future for all our kith and kin.
